Discipleship

By definition, a Christian Disciple is a follower and learner of Jesus Christ. In a word, a Christian is someone who is wholly DEPENDENT on Christ and his work.  In fact, the words “faith” or “trust” are words that indicate “dependence”.  So, when we say “We have faith in King Jesus” or “We trust King Jesus”, we are actually saying, “We depend on King Jesus.”  With that said, Christian Discipleship is the process by which disciples grow in their dependence on King Jesus.  We do this by:

  • acknowledging King Jesus as the absolute authority over our lives (Phil 2:9-11)
  • enjoying him as the absolute treasure in our lives (Phil 3:7-8)
  • abiding in his presence through prayer (John 15:5-8)
  • learning about him through studying his Word – the Bible (John 8:31-32)
  • being empowered by him through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (John 14:17)
  • exalting him together with his people – the church (Hebrews 10:23-25)
  • celebrating his presence through the sacraments of communion and baptism (John 6:55-56)
  • proclaiming his grace to those who don’t know him (Matt 28:18-20)
  • sharing his love to those who are in need (Micah 6:8)
  • renewing our love for him, and fidelity to him, through ongoing repentance (Col 3:12–17)
