Sunday Worship and Retirement Celebration
This Sunday, April 15th, as we worship our Triune Lord and exalt Christ together, we will also celebrate the retirement of our Senior Pastor, Rev. Julian Riddle. There will only be two services on this Sunday – 9:15 am and 11:00 am. There will be a reception after each service for our members to share well wishes with Julian and Debbie and enjoy light refreshments. Please note that there will be NO ABFs. However, there will be a children’s program during both services. You are welcome to shower Julian and Debbie with card and gifts, but please do not feel obligated.
Sunday Devotional / Honoring Christ’s Under-shepherds
In 1 Thessalonians 5:12 Paul tells us, “Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who work hard among you, and those who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” In this short little passage, the Lord tells his people that they should “respect” those who serve them faithfully in spiritual leadership. This word “respect” means to “esteem, value, and honor.” Along with that command, he gives us three reasons why we should show honor to our leaders:
1) Because they work hard for you. This means that that they have made sacrifices in their own lives in order to tirelessly serve, teach the gospel, pray for, and love those who belong to Christ.
2) Because they are over you in the Lord. This does not suggest a position of dominating authority. Rather, it means that they have been called to be over God’s people the way a shepherd guards over sheep. It means the pastor has been willing to suffer and endure mistreatment in their work of protecting God’s people from those who would abuse them who attack from inside and outside the church.
3) Because they admonish you. This means that they are committed to speaking the truth in love to those who belong to Christ, even when he knows that the hearer may respond poorly. It means that they teach and apply the Word of Christ, in firm but patient love, without regard to their own security or well being.
Notice, as John Calvin reminds us, that this passage does not say that we should give honor to pastors and leaders simply based on their position, because there are many pastors who “are idle and wicked.” However, this honor should be given “to those that labor, and to those that – by teaching the gospel – govern Christ’s people properly and faithfully” (Calvin’s Commentary, Vol 21, p. 292.)
Praise be to Christ, that he has seen fit to provide us with a Teaching Pastor who – although broken and sinful like all human beings – has served Surfside Presbyterian Church properly and faithfully throughout these many years. And so, according to the scriptures, we honor Pastor Julian and Debbie today. And more importantly, we worship and praise our Lord Jesus Christ, who loves his church and will ever call, prepare, equip, humble, and sanctify those that he calls to under-shepherd his Beloved people.
