Local Missions Sunday, Announcements, Expansion Project Update Video, Prayer List

Local Missions supported by Surfside Presbyterian Church:
This year our Session decided to move all our local missions under the direction of our Missions Committee.  This change orients our local and foreign missions under the same unified committee.  This Sunday, our missions emphasis will concentrate on local missions where we will welcome representatives from several community ministries that we support.  Mr. John Rickenbacker, Area Director of FCA, will be bringing our message during each of our morning worship services.  We will also hear from Mr. Kevin Turner of Fresh Brewed Outreach, and Eric Weber of Young Life.  Between services, please stop by the displays that will be set up in our Fellowship Hall. A representative from each ministry will be available to talk with you and answer any questions that you may have.

  • FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) – John Rickenbacker

  • South Strand Helping Hand – Jim Dove

Quotes on Local Missions:
“Celebrate deeds of mercy and justice. We live in a time when public esteem of the church is plummeting. For many outsiders and inquirers, the deeds of the church will be far more important than our words in gaining plausibility (Acts 4:32–33). Leaders in most places see “word-only” churches as net costs to their community, organizations of relatively little value. But effective churches will be so involved in deeds of mercy and justice that outsiders will say, “We cannot do without churches like this. This church is channeling so much value into our community that if it were to leave the neighborhood, we would have to raise taxes.”

“The city will challenge us to discover the power of the gospel in new ways. We will find people who seem spiritually and morally hopeless to us. We will think, “Those people will never believe in Christ.” But a comment such as this is revealing in itself. If salvation is truly by grace, not by virtue and merit, why should we think that anyone is less likely than ourselves to be a Christian? Why would anyone’s conversion be any greater miracle than our own? The city may force us to discover that we don’t really believe in sheer grace, that we really believe God mainly saves nice people — people like us.”
