Screen Shot 2015-06-12 at 3.12.37 PMThis week our Sunday Sermon “The One God Exalts” will focus on the humility of Christ found in Philippians 2:1-4.  At the beginning of chapter 2, the Apostle Paul gives us a command that can only be obeyed in the grace of Christ.  He says, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”  This is the power of the gospel that is expressed in our lives – when we love in a sacrificial way.  Notice, we are not told to “treat” each other with more significance, but to “count” others as more significant.  This is not simply a hands and feet command, it is a command of the heart.  There is a big difference between seemingly humble actions and an authentically humble heart.  The former can be accomplished through self-effort, but heart humility only happens through a work of the Spirit in accord with our repentance.  Please be in prayer that Christ may prepare you for worship on Sunday as we come to receive even more of the grace of Christ in our lives.

CSLewisHUMILITYCS Lewis Quote on Humility, “Miracles”  – “In the Christian story God descends to re-ascend. He comes down; down from the heights of absolute being into time and space, down into humanity … down to the very roots and sea-bed of the Nature He has created. But He goes down to come up again and bring the ruined world up with Him. One has the picture of a strong man stooping lower and lower to get himself underneath some great complicated burden. He must stoop in order to lift, he must almost disappear under the load before he incredibly straightens his back and marches off with the whole mass swaying on his shoulders.”

Screen Shot 2015-06-19 at 1.55.19 PMAdded Security at VBS – In light of the Charleston shooting, the pastoral staff would like to ask our elders and deacons to provide extra security during our Vacation Bible School next week.  We would like to ask that at least one deacon and one elder be here each night – Monday thru Friday, June 22-26 – from 5:30 to 6:30pm.

Screen Shot 2015-06-19 at 2.17.01 PMBible Study Canceled – In light of VBS during the week of June 22-26, our Tuesday Morning Retired Men’s Bible Study on Tuesday, June 24th is cancelled as well as all other activities at the church during the daytime hours.
